Data privacy: how to recode your spreadsheet before sharing
If your spreadsheet contains sensitive information, you can share data safely by recoding or anonymising fields. This keeps private details out of the file while still keeping the numbers and structure needed for analysis.
- Names → IDs: replace staff or customer names with values like
S001,S002. - Product names → codes: use values like
P01,P02if you prefer. - Contacts: remove phone numbers, emails, and addresses if they are not needed.
- Locations: shorten detailed addresses to broader areas if detail is not required.
NDA: if you want formal protection, a Non-Disclosure Agreement can be signed before any data is shared.
Control: only the columns needed to answer your questions are required.
